Singer Kelly Rowland attends the Boy & Girls Clubs' Back to School season kick-off in New York on August 4. - Andrew …Kelly Rowland may be best known for her powerful voice and stellar songs, but this fall she wants kids to pay attention to something she has to say -- not sing. She recently talked to Self.com about her role as spokesperson for BE READY, a new initiative with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
"Last year, over a million students failed to graduate with a high school diploma," Rowland tells the website. "The BE READY initiative is all about really getting the kids excited about goingback to school and really going out this year and being completely headstrong about getting their high school diploma."
"When I'm actually out doing philanthropic work right now, I feel like I'm just kind of healing myself," Rowland …
It's a tall task for sure, but one she feels strongly about. "I feel like I'm kind of nurturing a part of me as a kid,"says Rowland, 30. "It felt there was a void, like there was something missing. And when I'm actually out doing philanthropic work right now, I feel like I'm just kind of healing myself of all of those things as well."
Rowland's new endeavor, focusing on making young people successful, comes after her own recent solo success. Her single"Motivation," featuring Lil Wayne, off her third solo album Here I Am, reached number one on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts for seven straight weeks earlier this year.
"I wanted this to be the defining record -- as a sound, as an individual, and as an artist as well," the former"Destiny's Child" member explains.
If she brings her go-get-'em attitude to her newnon-profit project, we're sure she'll make a difference.
