Johnny Depp debuted a new character on Wednesday night: Marilyn Manson's new guitarist. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star hit the stage with Manson's band for a performance at Revolver magazine's Golden Gods Awards held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Depp, 48, mostly kept his head down as he strummed along to "Sweet Dreams" and "The Beautiful People" on his low-slung white electric guitar. He was so incognito on the dark stage, fans probably would not have even noticed the black-clad Oscar nominee if it weren't for Manson putting his arm around him as he sang — and then introducing him to the crowd. "If you don't recognize my personal friend ... my personal savior, my personal guitar hero ... Johnny Depp!"
This wasn't the first time the two have worked together. In fact, they go way back. Depp and Manson first collaborated on "The Nobodies," which appeared on the soundtrack to the actor's 2001 film, "From Hell." And recently, Depp recorded drums and guitar for Manson's cover of Carly Simon's 1972 hit "You're So Vain," which will appear on his upcoming album, Born Villain.
Before he made it big as an actor, Depp was a member of Rock City Angels in the '80s. And although he's gone on to become one of the most popular stars in the world — and not to mention People's "Sexiest Man Alive" — the "Rango" actor has stuck by his rock roots. Last June, he played guitar alongside Alice Cooper in London on the '70s metal singer's classics "18" and "School's Out." In 1997, he recorded guitar on the Oasis songs, "Fade In-Out" and "Fade Away," and around the same time he was also part of the band P, which featured members of Butthole Surfers, Ween, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the Sex Pistols.
