By now, Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, and even the U.S. Olympic swim team has performed a video cover of the unofficial song of the summer "Call Me Maybe." The song's singer and co-writer Carly Rae Jepsen, 26, reveals in this week's New York Times Magazine that she has a couple of favorites. "I remember seeing the Katy Perry one and being really blown away," the Canadian singer says. "I remember seeing the Cookie Monster and being stoked."
The tune, which has been on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 31 weeks, is still at No. 12. But with all of us at least beginning to tire of the undeniably catchy pop song, you might think that Jepsen herself would be over it, too. The truth is that she's still a fan. "I've sung it enough times, but I think because it has been not just a song I sing a lot but a life-changer — and the beginning of a crazy adventure — it doesn't feel like anything but a really nice warm memory," Jepsen explains. "It's a really nostalgic song for me already."
Interestingly enough, Jepsen set out to be a folk singer. (Check out her beautiful cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"!) Long before she hit it big with "Call Me Maybe," before her days as a contestant on "Canadian Idol," Jepsen says her parents exposed her to the music of Bruce Spiringsteen, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, and Rickie Lee Jones. Jepsen soon knew she wanted to sing, although she wasn't aspiring to be a pop star. "I was going to the Canadian College of Performing Arts, which is kind of a school like 'Fame,'" she says. "I thought I wanted to be a Broadway star, and then I got a guitar for Christmas. And I just started writing the first week."
Jepsen released an album featuring her hit, Kiss, this week. It's sold about 64,000 copies as Wednesday, and ranked No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart for albums. Pink's latest album, The Truth About Love, took the top spot.
