Chatty Suri. (JT Donnelly/INFDaily.com)Suri Cruise is 6 going on 16. While out with her mother, Katie Holmes, in Manhattan on Wednesday, the first grader strolled down the street jabbering on a cell phone — looking like your typical chatty teen.
Decked out in a pink outfit — sweater, sleeveless shirt, and skirt — Suri was a chatterbox as she walked and talked into her mother's phone, which was accessorized with a cute floral case. She was laughing and smiling during the conversation — and multitasked even further by doing some dance moves as they walked several blocks. Was she setting up a playdate with a classmate from her new pricey private school, Avenues? Talking to Grandma Holmes in Toledo, Ohio? Another strong possibility is that she was on the horn with her famous father, Tom Cruise, who has been so busy filming a movie in London that his only contact with the girl over the last two months has been via telephone.
People magazine has the latest on Cruise's long-distance relationship with his daughter in its new issue. The actor's friend, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, told the mag that although Cruise, 50, owns a private plane and must have some free time (after all, we've seen photos of him enjoying London's nightlife), he hasn't seen his youngest daughter since they spent a few days at Disney World on August 5 because, "There's a commitment [to his movies] that is huge." However, his lawyer Bert Fields told People that Cruise, who is filming the sci-fi flick "All You Need Is Kill," is in constant communication with Suri — it just takes place on the phone. "This is something that's been going on her whole life — when Tom is shooting a film out of the country he has to rely on the telephone," Fields said. McQuarrie added, "I can tell you that I haven't had a meeting with Tom that was not interrupted by a phone call with his daughter. His heart is broken. He misses his little girl and works very hard at parenting."
The magazine also reports that Suri was scheduled to travel to London to visit Cruise earlier this month, but the trip was canceled. Apparently Holmes, who has primary custody of Suri, thought a trip would be taxing on the girl, who is still adjusting to her new life in Manhattan.
As for Holmes, since her quickie divorce from Cruise, she seems to be reconnecting with her roots. In addition to making several trips to visit her parents and siblings in her native Ohio, the 33-year-old recently reached out to her one-time "Dawson's Creek" co-star and ex-boyfriend Joshua Jackson, who she once referred to as "my first love." The "Fringe" actor, who has been in a relationship with Diane Kruger since 2006, told Us Weekly that Holmes called him out of the blue. "Like any old friend, it was like, 'Oh, hi how are ya? What's going on?' 'I had a kid,'" Jackson recounted. "It was very nice, actually."
Sounds like that phone is getting a lot of use!
