Becoming a first time mom after 40 was the role of a lifetime for leading ladies Salma Hayek and Halle Berry. Like so many women today, they waited awhile to add a little one to their big lives. On this episode of "Spotlight to Nightlight," host Ali Landry talks to "Taxi" star and best-selling author Marilu Henner about starting her family after 40 and why it was worth the wait.
Ali's Take
When I think of Marilu Henner, I think "Ball of Fire." If anyone can pull off starting a family after 40 and still manage to write eight books, star in numerous Broadway productions, and be a visionary in all things health, it's her. Like most of the world, I will always remember Marilu from her "Taxi" days, but I found out about one of her true passions after I read her book, Healthy Life Kitchen, when I first moved to Los Angeles. After losing both her parents when they were in their 50s, she decided to make some changes and became a student and teacher of healthy living. I really have to credit her with teaching me how to eat healthy.
Marilu has accomplished so many things and I really agree with her that timing is everything. For her, the right time to start her family was after she turned 40. It's different for everyone. Who's to say you can be a better parent at 25 or 45? A lot of factors determine the best time to have a child: the right relationship, financial stability, feeling prepared and responsible, and, of course, what most women fear, if they can even have a healthy pregnancy after 40. Knowing how many children I would like to have, I've done the math in my head. I may be another woman who will be trying for a child while I am in my 40s. I can only hope that I can pull it off half as gracefully and with as much gusto as Marilu has!
