Jamie Lynn Spears: ‘The Hateful Comments Hurt’

Jamie Lynn Spears turns 21 on April 4. Brian Finke/GlamourJamie Lynn Spears turns 21 on April 4. Brian Finke/GlamourFive years ago, Jamie Lynn Spears was best known for two things -- her role on the Nickelodeon hit kids' series "Zoey 101," and for being pop sensation Britney Spears' little sister. And then, almost overnight, she began making headlines for something very different: becoming a pregnant teenager.

After giving birth to now-3-and-a-half-year-old daughter Maddie in June 2008, Spears more or less disappeared from the spotlight, choosing to quietly raise her child in Mississippi, not far from her hometown in Louisiana. Now, two months shy of her 21st birthday, Spears opens up to Glamour magazine in a rare interview and looks back on the choices she made as a 16-year-old and how they changed her life forever.

Amanda Seyfried's Sexy Glamour Photo Shoot

"After we wrapped shooting [for the season in 2007], I just wanted to go home to Louisiana and finish high school, be a cheerleader, all that. Then I found out I was pregnant. I was 16. I'd had one boyfriend," she shares in the magazine's March issue. "It doesn't make it perfect or all right. But I was judged for something that probably most everyone does. I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision."

At the time, the actress became the center of a media firestorm , with paparazzi following her and the baby's father, then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge, everywhere. Parents' groups outraged that the star of a show aimed at young girls was setting a dangerous example and many others accused the media of making teen pregnancy look glamorous. Then "Zoey 101" was abruptly canceled. It all added up to a mound of guilt and hurt for the frightened teenager.

19 Cute Celebrity Haircuts to Consider

"To have the world come down on a situation that was already affecting my family hugely was hard," Spears confesses in the article. "I did feel responsible for the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy. I hated when [the tabloids] said that. Everybody is dealt a hand of cards. It was my choice to play them the way I played them. But the hateful comments hurt."

And of course, there were the comments that were more curious than hurtful, like those about why the young woman with a skyrocketing career had unprotected sex in the first place.

12 Secret Signs He's Into You

"I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls...I was really scared to go to the doctor," Spears admits. "And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn't want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl."

Despite trying to make it work multiple times and even getting engaged at one point, Spears and Maddie's father, Casey Alridge, are now broken up, and while Spears says she goes out on the occasional date, she's waiting until she eventually gets serious with someone to bring him home to meet her daughter. It's something she's actually looking forward to.

12 Flirty Little Date Outfit Ideas

"I just want to be a soccer mom. I want to cook dinner every night. I want the kids to come home and be dirty and make the house messy," Spears explains. "At the same time, I have to be patient and wait for the right time and the right guy. I would have never known that until I went through what I went through. I'm just patiently waiting for Prince Charming."

In the meantime, Spears and her daughter have moved to Nashville, Tennessee, so the 20-year-old can pursue a career in music … just like her sister. "She's in such a good place right now. She's in love. She has her kids. So I'm happy for her. Of course [our bond as mothers], it's such a big thing, you know? Especially 'cause there's an age gap there -- she's 10 years older. I think if I were just a normal 20-year-old, I wouldn't be able to relate as much to her."

For some reason, the link to "12 flirty little date outfit ideas" seems inappropriate here.

Props to her for wanting to be a good mom, even at a young age. Most teenage moms party and stick their children with the grandparents. It's tough being a teenage mom (as I was) even if you have money and am famous. She's just lucky she has the financial stability to raise her daughter better. Yea, it was stupid for having unprotected sex, but she got something beautiful out of it and it seems to me she's getting her life back on track. No one is perfect.

i definitely agree (: there are countless young women i went to high school with that just pawned their children off on their parents while they party and do drugs because they're "still young" once you have a baby that should be your main focus i think.

While this is a serious article about what she went through after finding out that she was pregnant I find the last two links: '12 Flirty little date outfit ideas and 12 secrets that he's into you' aren't appropriate for this. Correct she is taking it seriously and at least she didn't do what the '16 and pregnant' chicks are doing: making it glamorous---now the Parents groups should be up in arms over that show. the 16 and pregnant mothers are probably going to be on a new show on MTV called '32 and Grandma's'
      • mollycule 3 months ago
!6 and pregnant doesn't make it glamorous. It constantly shows how their lives are turned into hell and they have trouble making it and doing school and can't date, etc. They do love their babies, sure, but their lives are difficult as hell in those shows. Also in "Teen Mom"
      • Orietta 3 months ago
Don't give MTV any ideas!! They've probably already thought of it though...It's sick the way these children are "raising" children on television and sad. The babies are the ones who suffer because of the immaturity and self-promotion of their parents.
      • Melissa Archibald 3 months ago
Molly the point is that teens are in awe of anyone on tv. Every adult knows that the Jersey Shore kids are total idiots, but that doesn't stop teens from thinking they are cool.

Plus I'm sure that every mother on teen mom complains about how tough it is but they also end with how much they love and appreciate their bundle of joy, which is what really hits home with teen girls. Also teens always say things like "That will never happen to me," "I would find a way to do better," and "I'm so much smarter that that."

i had my son when i was 17 and can relate to this story while yes she did not have it as hard as most of us financially it is still no easy task raising a child so young but it also makes you grow up faster and realize your values much quicker. I am almost 29 today and have a respectful young man while some my age are still out partying and getting loaded every night, i have a successful career and if i did not have my son not sure where i be today he was my inspiration.

Its hard being a single mother but joyful at the same time.Im proud of her cuz she could have easely got a abortion and hind it but instead took full responibility for her actions. She gave up her life for her child and she's my hero for that.Take something bad and turn it into good

When this happened I couldn't believe it and the worst part was that it happened when Britney Spears was going through the worst in her life so this news made everything much much worse for the Spears Family at the time. Everything was just going wrong for them and it was sad to watch. But I guess this is a good way to show that when you're going through rough times always remind yourself that "THIS TOO SHALL PASS", keep repeating that and you will feel better because everything eventually passes and comes to an end.

Hey Elizabeth, do me a favor and shut the hell up about how the girls in Louisiana are. From what I've seen, the girls in Texas aren't exactly all like the Dallas Cowgirls. You're smarter when you're quiet.
    • Tia  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  3 months ago
@ Jessi---while I agree with your statement about teenagers (not just teenage girls, teenagers period) I have 2 teenage children, one of each gender. I am very vocal about my opinions about abstinance and waiting but am as equal in letting them know that if they make a different decision, in no way will I not help and support them to take actions that will prevent lifelong repercussions. I wouldn't love it but I would rather my children protect themselves from unexpected, unprepared parenthood and disease than to be pious in my decision and allow those decisions to have resounding affects on their lives, dreams and opportunites. Fine to have an opinion but we don't live in theory/opinion land.

despite how young she was when she became pregnant and all, im glad to no that she is taking full responsibilty on her child and wanting to be the best mother that she can. some teens dont take these things as seriously and arent as responsible about it. im at least glad to see that she cares.

Right off the bat you have screwed up. You have an article about teen pregnancy but your side bars have secret signs he is into you and firty date dresses. Hmmmmm. I think Ms Spears made a good decision for herself in keeping her child. She did made a choice to have sex (obviously without protection) that a lot of girls make as teenagers but she got "caught." Too bad that she was nailed to the cross for it, after all, she is only human. Fortunately she was able to afford to raise this child unlike so many other teenage mothers. Adoption is certainly an option for many, abortion is hard on the soul as well as the body, a lot of counseling is needed before and after. Again, she tried to set an example before and after; I think she did a good job with an unfortunate situation. Bet she is a great mom too.

Everyone makes stupid mistakes. The media intensifies the situation so much, that it makes these people look like monsters. Like when the mags go on and on for months about so and so cheating. You'd be lucky these days to actually find a decent person in the 'normal world'.

There are 3 types of decisions:
      1. Good decisions
      2. Bad decisions you complicate with more bad decisions
3 Bad decisions you make good with future good decisions

Sounds like Jamie make choice #3--finishing school even after having a baby.

its always interesting that 'hateful comments' come from fellow sinners. i admire her for taking responsibility, for cherishing her role as a mother, and who knows what great things her child might accomplish in this world. if anyone would like her 'punished' for her actions. well, as we know, try raising another human being, sleepless nights, potty training, cutting teeth............enough 'punishment' to fit the crime, if we want to look at it that way.

I'm glad to see articles like this. I don't see this as condoning or rewarding teen pregnancy at all. She is just showing that things can turn out fine even when the timing of her pregnancy was obviously not ideal. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders. There's a lot of celebrities out there that do drugs, drunk drive, etc. and all she did was get pregnant---that's something that could happen to anyone.
