Now that she's settled in to her new life as a mom — embracing those late-night feedings and early morning wake-up calls — Giuliana opens up about making it through the tough times and leaning on her husband, Bill Rancic.
Giuliana has long been covering the celebrity beat, hosting "E! News" and appearing as a style critic on the network's "Fashion Police" series. Because her focus was on building her career, the 37-year-old Italian-born TV personality says she was blindsided by her inability to conceive a child after getting married in 2007. "I always say how I chased my career instead of chasing guys," Giuliana tells Health magazine. "And everybody was patting me on the back. No one ever told me, 'Oh, by the way, your eggs change when you reach a certain age.' I didn't think 35 was old! So when the doctor said, 'It's not as easy as you thought it would be,' it was a real blow. Because I felt so young. I mean, this is a girl who was running six miles a day, and eating healthy, so how can you tell me that I'm not healthy in that department?"
(Health)During her four-year struggle to conceive, which she shared on her Style Network show "Giuliana and Bill," she tried to remain upbeat, but admittedly became frustrated by seeing other women become pregnant. "'I'm a good person, and I could give someone the greatest life of all, but yet I can't get pregnant." And then you watch these TV shows, '16 and Pregnant,' and these girls who want nothing to do with their babies are pregnant," she says to the magazine. "And you're going, what? None of that made sense to me."
Making the situation even worse was her breast cancer diagnosis a year ago. Giuliana immediately underwent a double mastectomy and started a five-year cancer treatment that prevented her from conceiving naturally. "Whenever I was so sad, when I was on the floor kicking and screaming and crying, the best way I could pull out of it was when I would remind myself, 'Even with this happening, you're still better off than a lot of people,'" she tells Health. "For me, it was saying 'Yes, I have breast cancer…' But, you know what? Thank god I'm going to a good doctor. I'm so fortunate I found it early. I'm so fortunate to have Bill. I'm so fortunate that I have a boss who understands."
Giuliana says her husband's support is what really got her through her health crisis. Immediately after getting her diagnosis, she reported to work to film "E! News." After she wrapped, "I ran into my dressing room and started hysterically crying," she says in the interview. "Bill was really the one who had to pick me up off the floor and say, 'Hey, we're making a plan here.' He took over."
Now, one year after her diagnosis and a month after a surrogate delivered their baby boy, Giuliana says she's at her happiest when she's with her two guys: "Taking a long walk on the lakefront of Chicago with my husband and my baby boy."
