Will and Mattias in L.A. (SWAP/Splash News)Will Ferrell acts like such a big kid all the time that sometimes we forget that he has children of his own. Three of them, in fact — all boys. The funnyman did the school run on Thursday, picking up middle son Mattias, 5, in West Hollywood, California.
The Ferrell fellas were similarly dressed, wearing sci-fi T-shirts (his, which said "Sleestak," is a nod to the lizard men in his 2009 movie "Land of the Lost," while Mattias opted for a "Star Wars" theme), shorts, and sneakers. The actor carried his son's library books.
Ferrell, 44, had time to pick up his son from school this week, but next week his schedule will be jam-packed. He's headed to the East Coast to prep for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig on May 12, which will be the third time he's hosted the NBC comedy sketch show since he was a regular cast member a decade ago. The musical performances will be provided by Usher.
Ferrell will be using the "SNL" appearance as an opportunity to spread the word about his upcoming film "The Campaign," in which he plays an incumbent congressman who gets caught in a scandal and, for the first time in his career, faces tough political opposition by a character played by Zach Galifianakis. Jay Roach, the director of the film, told MTV that the pair are a comedy dream team: "Those two guys, who are both very, very good at playing somewhat deluded losers, going against each other with the conviction that they both deserve to be winners, that to me always sounds fun." Ferrell is also promoting his Spanish-language film "Casa de Mi Padre," which had a limited run in the United States earlier this year and is opening in Mexico this month.
Generating even more buzz in the movie industry is the recent major announcement that an "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" sequel is in the works. Yes, Ferrell will be reprising his role as the worst newsman on the planet. So far Steve Carell and Paul Rudd have worked out deals for the film, but many of the other details are still being hashed out. When Ferrell announced the news about the sequel during an appearance on "Conan," he was in character as Burgundy and told the audience, "As of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to 'Anchorman.' It is official! There will be a sequel to 'Anchorman.' There will be a sequel." Of course, he followed that by walking off the stage playing a flute.
Whew — with a busy schedule like his, it seems likely that Ferrell may not get that many opportunities to do the school runs regularly, which makes this photo of his day out with Mattias even more special.
