Gomez covers Elle. (Carter Smith/ELLE)Justin Bieber is certainly a heartbreaker, but according to his girlfriend of over a year, Selena Gomez, he also has a soft, sweet side. But we already guessed that after he rented out the entire Staples Center in Los Angeles — which is big enough to house 20,000 people — in September so he and his gal pal could have a private romantic date and screen the Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet classic, "Titanic." In the July issue of Elle, Gomez reveals a little more about the memorable night. "If I'll share anything with you, it's that he really is a hopeless romantic. I had just mentioned it in the car — all I said is that I really want to see 'Titanic' again, and then…"
And although it feels like there are new photos and details of the teen superstars every day, Gomez, who turns 20 next month, says she and Bieber, 18, do manage to keep some things in their romance private. "I'm glad I can say that there are things you don't know about us."

Gomez may be a successful and rich star now, but she says that was not always the case. Before she got her break on her own Disney sitcom in 2007, her family — headed up by her then-single mother who gave birth to Gomez as a teen — was struggling in Grand Prairie, Texas. "I can remember about seven times when our car got stuck on the highway because we'd run out of gas money," Gomez tells Elle. Still, her mother Mandy, "saved up to take me to concerts. She took me to museums, aquariums, to teach me about the world, about what's real."

Gomez is in bloom. (Carter Smith/ELLE)It makes sense that Gomez would eventually become a star — after all, she is named after one of the biggest in Latin music: Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was murdered by the president of her fan club in 1995 when she was just 23. Two years later, a biopic about Selena's mega success was released, and it starred a then relatively unknown Jennifer Lopez. Gomez, who next stars in the very adult "Spring Breakers" with fellow former teen stars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson, says she had an instant connection to the 1997 film — and its star. Even though she was just 5-years-old at the time, "I made a bustier out of a bathing suit that I dyed black," she says. "I put glue and glitter all over it and I wouldn't take it off."
