Robert Pattinson kicks back on the cover of Vanity Fair's December issue.

It's been one year since "Twilight" hit the big screen -- and Robert Pattinson became a big star thanks to his role as Edward Cullen in the popular vampire series. Vanity Fair's Evgenia Peretz got to spend some quality time with Pattinson and made some interesting discoveries about the 23-year-old actor, who graces the cover of the magazine's December issue (on newsstands November 4).
For example, Rob's painfully shy. "I'm unbearably self-conscious about stuff," he admits, noting that when he's being followed by the paparazzi he's terrified that his "a** crack is showing."

He also isn't quite sure how he became a Hollywood heartthrob, when he thinks he resembles "a cartoon character."
Still, the girls flock to RPatz, and that's why you can usually find him holed up in his hotel room reading a good book rather than out at the clubs. "I guess I'm not the type of guy cut out to do a franchise," he says. "I'm not much of a crowd person."

Although he has a reputation for being rather private, "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke notes that Pattinson was a social butterfly during the filming of the movie. He was "always drunk" and armed with his guitar while entertaining his castmates, including Kristen Stewart, during their downtime. While the actor insists that his relationship with Stewart is strictly platonic, Hardwicke adds that a "nervous attraction" between the "Twilight" leads was brewing off-screen. Hmmm ... sounds like they might be more than friends to me! Of course, Pattinson hates that kind of speculation.

"It doesn't make any difference what you say [to the tabloids]," he sighs. "I've literally been across the country [from Kristen], and it's like 'Oh, they were on secret dates!' It's like 'Where? I can't get out of my hotel room!'"

Despite the romance rumors, he's very happy Kristen's been on this wild "Twilight" rollercoaster ride with him. "She's influenced how I've done all the 'Twilight' stuff. It's quite nice to have someone who is genuinely indifferent to the whole spectacle of everything."
