Darren Criss: ‘You Don’t Have to Apologize for Liking ‘Glee”

©Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage©Jeffrey Mayer/WireImageAs one of the stars of the musical Fox hit "Glee," Darren Criss knows exactly who makes up his fanbase. It's either those screaming teenage girls or their mothers who watch with them. "What's funny is that the moms always feel like they have to qualify everything. 'I'm here for my daughter. Can I get a picture?,'" the 24-year-old reveals to Details magazine. "You don't have to apologize for liking 'Glee.' My joke is the fans are either 16 or 60. What I wouldn't give to have someone come back who wasn't a mom or a teenager."

One of those moms -- who I assume really was excited to meet Criss on behalf of her children -- is former presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. The Republican is known for her opposition to gay rights, so it's surprising she would approve of a show with several gay characters, including that of Criss. "I never let my politics supersede my manners," Criss — who's straight in real life -- notes. "She came up with her husband and was sweet as can be. She was like, 'My kids love the show. I don't watch it myself, but I'd love it if you could sign these postcards.' It dawned on me that she didn't know what the hell 'Glee' was."

However, plenty of so-called Gleeks do follow the weekly adventures of the New Directions. "Glee" averages more than 10.3 million viewers in its third season, and the cast has produced a dozen albums, many of them chart-toppers. Between that and being cast in his first Broadway show, taking over Daniel Radcliffe's role in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," Criss admits that life has been a whirlwind for him lately. "Hollywood is a strange, strange thing," he says. "I feel like I've been invited to a very exclusive ball and I'm just trying to make nice with everybody and hope that if they kick me out they'll at least give me a ride home."

In one very surreal moment, Criss describes meeting not one but two big-name singers. "I never thought I would meet Mariah Carey, but I really never thought I'd be introduced to her by Whitney Houston. She's like, 'Hey, baby, this is Mariah,'" Criss explains. "I'm like, 'I know. I'm Darren. I don't know what I'm doing here.'"

He should have told Michele Bachmann that he was really glad her children enjoy his portrayal of a sexually active gay teenager.

Bachmann's kids love Glee? That leads me to believe she has no idea of what her children watch on TV. Nice parenting. I have zero problem with the gay characters on Glee, but that show has dealt with some fairly serious matters involving sex, bullying, and other sensitive issues. I don't think ANY kid should watch Glee without a parent being aware of it and ready to talk about whatever issue arises.

Yeah, I don't think anyone really thinks about meeting their musical idols. I guess in theory, but not reality. I always wished I could have met Ella Fitzgerald. I had just discovered her in my late teens and then found out she had died some years earlier. I still hope to see Richard Marx performing live before I die (or he dies hopefully never). Other than that, I don't really think about it too much. Music means so much to me just personally and spiritually that I'm a fan of any and everybody that has touched my heart somehow. I would probably react just as awestruck if I met Peter Bradley Adams (which many people wouldn't think was a big deal probably) as I would if I met Whitney Houston or Madonna or someone huge like that. I'm in awe of people who can genuinely sing well and write profound lyrics that touch some core place inside you, that speak beyond words and connects you to a deeper emotional truth than you can verbalize on your own. I wish I was that kind of talented. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a songwriter or musician. I'm just a singer. I can interpret the mood and emotion of music well, but that's about it.

Wow so does that mean he is not gay in real life? Whew cuz I think he is really handsome!!
      • Bill 4 months ago
Why the "whew"...? Because gay men are useless simply because they're not interested in you? #$%$ bigot.
      • Kitty 4 months ago
No, Bill, I think Crazy is disappointed because Crazy is gay and hoped DC was too. haha
      • Bill 4 months ago
@Kitty - If Crazy actually is a gay male, why would he be relieved to find out a man he thinks is handsome is actually straight??? Sounds more like a bigoted straight female to me because learning that he's straight means a better chance for her (in her deluded dreams maybe!)

Glee is funny, entertaining, and the people in it very talented. Nothing else matters!
    • JanH  •  4 months ago
Not a parent, not a teenager. I enjoy Glee for the singing and it's kind of funny, and Mr. Schue well... gotta like him. This season though, has been a bit much. I got the storyline with Kurt and the closet gay footballer, but Brit and Santana too? It's just a bit too heavy with those messages now.
