Victoria Beckham on Life Before David: Nobody Wanted to Date Me!

Maybe it was her pout?

Victoria Beckham married one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, but at the height of her fame as part of the Spice Girls, her love life was lacking. Reminiscing about the early days in the group for a new British documentary, the singer-turned-designer said that, despite public perception, she wasn’t exactly fighting away male attention during her days as Posh Spice.

“There was a stage where someone wrote once how every woman wanted to be one of us and every man wanted to date one of us,” Beckham says in “Spice Girls’ Story: Viva Forever,” which airs in the U.K. on Christmas. “Not that anyone wanted to date me. I think everyone wanted to sort of like just brush my hair.”

Of course, the 38-year-old did have a happily-ever-after ending. In early 1997 – after the Spice Girls burst onto the scene with their highly successful debut album Spice – the then-Victoria Adams was introduced to soccer star David at a Manchester United charity match and they started dating. The couple later admitted they had scoped out one another before their initial meeting. David told Britain’s TheSun that after seeing Victoria in the “Say You’ll Be There” video, he declared, “That’s the girl for me and I'm going to get her! She's my idea of perfection. I knew that if she wanted me, we would be together forever.”

As soon as “Posh and Becks” started dating, there was tremendous interest in their relationship (perhaps it was because of the matching tattoos, outfits, and hairstyles?) and things proceeded at a rapid pace. Less than a year after meeting, he slipped a 3-carat, marquise-cut sparkler on her finger – and bought himself his own engagement band with 96 diamonds. Their 1999 wedding was like a fairytale – the lavish affair was held in an Irish castle! By then their first child, Brooklyn, had been born and Victoria and David sat on his and hers red velvet thrones at their reception with the baby’s crib at their side. For the $800,000 affair, they employed 437 people and thought of every detail – down to the flag flying above the castle with the initials VBD for Victoria, Brooklyn, and David.

In 2007, the Beckhams took Hollywood, moving to Los Angeles so David could play for the Galaxy, which he did until this contract recently expired. Although they are now parents to four children – Brooklyn, 13, Burberry model Romeo, 10, Cruz, 7, and Harper, 1 – the couple still go on weekly date nights. “We always make time for each other,” David told Hello! in 2010. “We have a date night every Wednesday.” So what is a typical Beckham date night like? Well, if they don’t go out for dinner or to see a concert, “We catch up on what we’ve missed on TV,” Victoria said. “We watch ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians.’”

But their relationship hasn’t been without drama – there have been numerous tabloid stories over the years linking the superstar athlete to different women. “We’re soul mates,” Victoria told Hello!. “Sometimes people throw s--- at us but we get through it. You deal with it, or you don’t. You go into a marriage knowing there are going to be ups and downs. We’re in the public eye so we have more to deal with than most. We accepted that years ago. It’s just about us and the family.”

So while she may not have had guys throwing themselves at her back in her Spice Girls days, that seems to be a good thing. She was available when the right one came along.
