Thursday is Spirit Day, and some pretty big name celebs are wearing purple to show their support.
Spirit Day is when GLAAD encourages millions to wear purple as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth and to speak out against bullying. It was started in 2010 by high school student Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives, and three years later, it's bigger than ever.
None other than Oprah Winfrey kicked off Spirit Day on Twitter by turning her profile pic purple and encouraging her more than 21 million followers to do the same.
Oprah continues the conversation on Sunday when she hosts a special on OWN on being gay in America, featuring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Wanda Sykes, and Dan Bucatinsky. On October 27, she premieres the documentary "Bridegroom" on OWN, after it premieres this coming weekend in theaters.
Here are just a few of the other tweets coming from celebs this Spirit Day:
Other Spirit Day participants this year include Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Ke$ha, Demi Lovato, Snooki and JWoww, the cast of TeenNick's "Degrassi," Betty White and the entire cast of "Hot in Cleveland," country star Kacey Musgraves, openly gay singer Mary Lambert (whose voice is featured on "Same Love"), Kelly Osbourne, out basketball players Jason Collins and Brittney Griner, WWE Superstar Darren Young, and actress/singer Zendaya.
