Michelle Kwan and Clay Pell (Patriot Pics/FAMEFLYNET PICTURES)Two-time Olympic figure skating medalist Michelle Kwan got married over the weekend in Providence, Rhode Island, The Providence Journal reports.
Kwan, 32, wed United States Coast Guard Lt. Clay Pell, 31, on Saturday at the First Unitarian Church on the East Side of Providence. The two met in April 2011 and were engaged a few months later in September.
So, who is Clay Pell?
Since it’s Inauguration Day, it is important to point out Pell’s political roots! He is the grandson of the late U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell and is also a JAG lawyer and director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House. Kwan also has ties to the Nation’s Capital — she is a public policy envoy with the Department of State.
According to People, Kwan wore an ivory Vera Wang gown while Clay dressed in full uniform during the ceremony.
There were reportedly around 250 guests in attendance, including Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Dick Button and Dorothy Hamill along with Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and his wife, Stephanie.
Kwan and Pell shared self-written vows and even spontaneously kissed before their traditional end-of-ceremony kiss.
"I never was one who believed in love at first sight, but I have to admit it happened for us,” Kwan told People shortly after she first got engaged. “I felt there was a magnetic connection between us. I thought he was the one from the beginning."
Big congrats to the newlyweds!
