Joan Rivers in Hot Water Again Over Heidi Klum Holocaust Comments

No one has ever accused Joan Rivers of censoring herself, regardless of the topic.

Following her barbs Tuesday night on “The Late Show with David Letterman” that Adele should add “deep fried chicken” to the end of the title of her song “Rolling in the Deep,” a comment Rivers made Monday night E!'s “Fashion Police” has her back in the headlines.

When critiquing supermodel Heidi Klum’s revealing, low-cut look at Sunday night’s Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar party, Rivers felt it necessary to (yet again) invoke the Holocaust. “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens,” Rivers said.

Don't worry — you're not the only person who needed to pick their jaw up off the floor after hearing the off-color joke. Needless to say, many found the statement rather appalling, including the Anti-Defamation League.

ADL director Abraham H. Foxman, who himself is a Holocaust survivor, called the joke, “vulgar and offensive to Jews and Holocaust survivors, and indeed to all Americans,” in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"There are certain things about the Holocaust that should be taboo," Foxman continued. "This is especially true for Jews, for whom the Holocaust is still a deeply painful memory. It is vulgar and offensive for anybody to use the death of 6 million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust to make a joke, but this is especially true for someone who is Jewish and who proudly and publicly wears her Jewishness on her sleeve.”

Rivers was quick to defend herself. “My husband lost the majority of his family at Auschwitz, and I can assure you that I have always made it a point to remind people of the Holocaust through humor,” she said in a statement to “omg! Insider.”

Ironically, "omg! Insider" caught up with Rivers on Wednesday night in NYC at an event for Jesse Tyler Ferguson's "Tie the Knot" foundation for gay marriage, where she said she had recently been ordained as a rabbi to perform marriage ceremonies.

Of course, Rivers has a long history of using humor to address taboo subjects, and it’s certainly not the first time the comedienne has made jokes about the Holocaust. The most recent incident was last August, when her new book, “I Hate Everyone… Starting With Me” was banned from being sold at Costco, and she took to a bullhorn at the store in Burbank, California, in protest. “This is the beginning of Nazi Germany,” she told local news channel KTLA.

omg! has reached out to both E! and a rep for Klum, but has not yet heard back at this time.

In related Klum news, the always-fashionable mom-on-the-go has unveiled a new women’s active wear collection for New Balance, her third for the brand. The line will launch exclusively at Lady Foot Locker this spring.
