Will Jessica Simpson Be a Hit Playing Herself on New Sitcom?

Jessica Simpson has a new gig on the small screen.

The songstress is set to star in an untitled NBC comedy that, although scripted, will be inspired by her real life.

The 32-year-old hasn't exactly proven herself to be a great thespian; she won four Razzie Awards for her work in the movies "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Employee of the Month." Her resume also includes stinkers like "Major Movie Star" and "Blonde Ambition." (If you've never heard of them, you're one of the lucky ones.)

Still, she has proven that she's excellent at playing an exaggerated version of herself.

Her MTV show "Newlyweds," which ran from 2003 to 2005, was a big hit, and helped transform her from just another pop singer into a huge celebrity. Simpson's empire now includes her lucrative Jessica Simpson Collection, a seat on the panel of NBC's reality competition "Fashion Star," and a $4 million deal as a spokesperson for Weight Watchers.

Much of the reason "Newlyweds" was so successful was because Jess played up her goofy side. She came across as down-to-earth and ditzy, and generally played "I Loved Lucy's" Lucy to then-husband Nick Lachey's no-nonsense Desi. Their roles were clear from the very first episode, when Simpson famously wondered whether the Chicken of the Sea brand tuna she was eating was actually chicken.

Simpson's sure to have similar moments on the new show. "I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "So between the real-life elements and a great team of writers, I think we'll have people laughing!"

The "With You" singer actually filmed a TV pilot for ABC back in 2004, but it was rejected. However, the New York Times quoted one network executive as saying that Simpson was "the best thing on it."

Do you think Simpson's new show will be a hit?
