While chatting with MTV News, the "X Factor" judge was asked about fellow Disney darling Selena Gomez, to whom Lovato was once quite close.
"It's so awesome to see her come so far," the 20-year-old said about Gomez. "We've been through a lot together. We've had periods of times when we grew apart, and we just didn't really talk."
Continued the "Heart Attack" singer: "But now we're in a place where I think we realize that life is so short, and that when you have people in your life that love you so much, then you should just always be around them."
"And she's gonna be a big sister!" Lovato exclaimed (Gomez shared on Mother's Day that her mom is pregnant). "And I want to be around for that! So, everything about her is just - she has a great soul, she's talented, she's beautiful, and she will always be really, really close to my heart."
Lovato recently admitted in Complex magazine that after her 2010 stint in rehab she doesn't have "loads of friends" and chooses to keep her social circle small.
"When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls," the singer recalled. "I had four texts. That was a wake up call."
However, Lovato tells MTV that although she and Gomez may not talk "every single day" they always pick up right where they left off.
On Twitter, each singer even complimented one another on each other's new single.
"Umm.. obsessed with Come & Get It - @selenagomez. So happy for you lady. #LiterallyOnRepeat!!!" Lovato tweeted.
Justin Bieber's ex then tweeted back a screengrab photo of herself listening to "Heart Attack," along with a big smiley face.

"I have a song on my album called 'Warrior,' and it's very, very meaningful to me," Lovato explained to Jimmy Fallon. "It's really heavy, the lyrics, but it's an inspirational song as well … It's a negative thing turned positive"
The singer continued: "It was kinda like a tribute to releasing an album, as well as overcoming some really, really difficult things in my life."
Lovato's new album, "Demi," is out now.
