Amanda Bynes’s Mom Granted Temporary Conservatorship

Troubled former actress Amanda Bynes's mother, Lynn Bynes, was granted a temporary conservatorship in court on Friday.

The ruling is effective as of August 8, and remains in effect until Friday, September 30, the day of her general conservatorship hearing.

This gives Lynn Bynes control over Amanda, 27, and her estate, with the exception of a bonded order of $3.75 million. It also gives Lynn the right to determine where Amanda lives and to make choices over her medical care.

However, Judge Glen M. Reiser indicated that a separate mental health court has control over Bynes's medical care while she is still in treatment. He added that he based much of his decision to grant the temporary conservatorship on the findings of the courtroom investigator, who evaluated her mental health.

The Judge motioned to have all medical and psychiatric records placed under seal and to close the court during any psychiatric or medical testimonies. Both motions were granted. After signing over the paperwork for the temporary conservatorship the Judge said, "[Amanda] has a lack of capacity to give informed consent to medical care."

Amanda's court-appointed lawyer, Mary Shea, said in court that she met with Amanda multiple times over the past two weeks and explained the process to her client. She added that Amanda still didn't feel that there was a need for the conservatorship, and therefore, they were requesting that the court continue to petition it.

Lynn and Rick Bynes, Amanda's father, first headed to court exactly two weeks ago to take the necessary legal steps to try to help their daughter, following a particularly troubling week in which their daughter was hospitalized for trying to set a fire in a woman's driveway. However, Judge Reiser refused to make a ruling until Amanda had gone through further psychiatric evaluations.

"I need to have a dialogue with [the actress] to gauge the propriety of a conservatorship to move forward," Reiser said on July 26. "There are issues of liberty and property."

"Amanda has profound issues with her body image and is obsessed with the idea that she (and others) are ugly," Lynn and Rick wrote then in their request to the court. "She talks incessantly about cosmetic surgeries that she wants completed. She also encourages her mother to have plastic surgeries. We are concerned that the surgeries she wants to have are dangerous and detrimental to her health."
