‘Transformers’ Star Tyrese Gibson ‘Ready’ for Anything

To keep his fit physique, Tyrese Gibson runs at least five miles a day. - Naharro Gimenez/WireImage.comIn the latest flick in the "Tranformers" franchise,"Dark of the Moon," Tyrese Gibson plays U.S. Air Force Chief Master Seargeant Robert Epps, as he has in the first two films, which means his character has to look the part of a super tough military man who must take on the bad guys while trying to save the world. So how much did Gibson have to amp up his usual workout routine in order to get in stellar shape for the role?Actually, not at all.

"There's a saying," Gibson explains, "that if you stay ready, you ain't got to get ready."

And, for the 32-year-old, "being ready"involves a pretty rigorous routine. "I like to run at least five miles a day. You know, abs, bench, chest, arms," he says. "I do what they call like a 'vanity workout.' It's like you just want to look good, you want to feel like a star, but it's not as technical as a full on body builder."

As for nutrition, that part isn't always quite as easy."My biggest challenge is eating clean," Gibson explains. "He tries to stick with lean meals consisting of baked chicken or fish, along with plenty of salads with vinaigrette dressing, but he often can't resist a few other, not-quite-so-healthy extras. "I love chocolate turtles. They're my favorite. I also love Kit Kats, Snickers," Gibson admits. "You know, those are the things that I don't supposedly eat, but here and there I'll slipup and grab me one or two ... or seven."

Lacking discipline once in a while when it comes to candy might be OK, but on the set of "Transformers 3," Gibson and the rest of the cast and crew were all business, thanks to the intensity of executive producer Michael Bay. "It was dead serious. It's been a very long time since I've been around somebody that focused, and I think the fans are going to see that when they see the movie. Michael Bay showed up on his A game and he commanded and demanded a lot of us on the set," he says. "As actors, we worked our asses off on the set, but then when the movie wrapped and it was over, Bay continued ... working with the special effects. I mean it's just a crazy workload."

Actually, Gibson's got his own crazy workload. He shot the mega-hit "Fast Five" at the same time as "Transformers," recently finished recording his first new R&B album in five years, Open Invitation, and released a motivational book earlier this year titled How to Get Out of Your Own  Way, in which he shares his philosophies for finding peace and fulfillment in life. The feedback the book's gotten from a few very famous women has astounded him. "Michelle Obama read my book and wrote me a letter from the White House. I just got this thing framed. It's just crazy," he gushes. "Oprah Winfrey's tweeted about my book. It's unbelievable."

Perhaps less exhilarating was when his explanation of hischapter on cheating got him in a bit of hot water a few months back on"The Wendy Williams Show" when Gibson said it's expected of men to cheat since it's part of their up bringing. His comments prompted plenty of pushback from Williams, followed by some spirited debate in the blogosphere,including lots of, er, not-so-friendly comments.

But before you call the guy a chauvinist pig, according to Gibson, he wasn't given the time to properly finish his point during the show. "Wendy ended up cutting me off at the end of the interview because we ran out of time. I'm not saying that all men cheat because that would be unrealistic. But the culture, the man culture, growing up ... the conversation amongst most men is how many different women you can have sex with. But if awoman goes out and has sex with 12 different guys on one college campus, she's going to be called every name in the book."

It's a double standard for sure, says Gibson, who also insists that just because he calls it as he sees it, doesn't mean he condonesit. "I'm not saying it's right at all because, you know, there's someonethat's going to be on the receiving end of a cheat, which is mostly women. And it doesn't feel good. Ultimately, there's no way to justify it. It's not right."
