  • 'Doritos Girl' Ali Landry Shares Scars From Super Bowl Commercial

Ali Landry in 1999 (L) and 2012If you're looking for a textbook example of overnight celebrity, you couldn't do much better than Ali Landry. Landry became a sensation in 1998 when she starred in an ad for Doritos that aired during the Super Bowl and also starred a pre-"Will & Grace" Sean Hayes.

The ad featured Landry performing stunts in a laundromat, much to the delight of her male admirers. To say it helped launch Landry's career would be a huge understatement; the ad changed everything. We caught up with the onetime Miss USA, who has since become a successful businesswoman, to talk about her memories of that famous ad, the scar it left behind, as well as what she's up to now.

The Doritos commercial is one of the iconic ads in Super Bowl history. How did it happen?

I hadn't had many auditions. I'm from a small town in Louisiana. Los Angeles was very overwhelming. I remember walking into this room with wall-to-wall gorgeous girls. And I remember thinking, "I'm not up for this today." I looked at the

  • Rooney Mara’s Super Bowl Connection

(Photo: REUTERS/Carlo Allegri)(Photo: REUTERS/Carlo Allegri)February is a big HUGE month for actress Rooney Mara. Not only is the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" star up for a Best Actress Oscar on the 26th, but the New York Giants, the team that was founded by great-great-grandfather Tim Mara, is in the Super Bowl.

The Giants are still very much a Mara-centric team. Rooney's father, Chris Mara, is the senior vice president of player evaluations. His father (Rooney's grandfather) Wellington Mara served as owner until his death in 2005. Currently, John Mara (Rooney's uncle) is 50% owner of the Giants. He also serves as the team's president and CEO.

However, Mara’s father is conflicted about his priorities this February, and is likely going to be watching the red carpet more closely than the football field. On the morning of the Oscar nominations, “I let out a pretty big scream,” he told ESPN.com. “And then I cried. I thought she was on the bubble because the category was so

  • Super Bowl Name Explained

So there you are, stuffing your face and arguing over whether Tom Brady looks better with long hair or short, when somebody says, "Why do they call it the Super Bowl?" Here's the scoop.

Young bucks might not remember this, but the Super Bowl wasn't always called the Super Bowl. Until the late 1960s, the title game was called the National Football League Championship Game. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? When the American Football League merged with the National Football League, the Super Bowl was born.

So, who coined the phrase? Most pigskin historians give credit to Lamar Hunt. According to legend, the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs was sitting at his home watching his daughter play with a bouncy ball called a Super Ball. Hunt apparently got to thinking that "Super Bowl" would be a catchy name for the big game. He wrote a note to NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle offering up the suggestion. "I have kiddingly called it the 'Super Bowl,' which obviously can be
