Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in the latest issue of Elle . - ElleWhile Joseph Gordon-Levitt has recently had turns in films like the romcom "(500) Days of Summer," box office behemoth "Inception," and the upcoming "50/50," based on the true story of a young guy struggling with cancer," he wasn't always so in demand. In fact, following his stint on sitcom "3rd Rock From the Sun," which ended in 2001, the 30-year-old tells Elle magazine that he couldn't get a gig. "Nobody wanted to hire me -- I can see where they wouldn't want the kid from '3rd Rock From the Sun,'" he admits. "I came to the conclusion, I'm not going to wait for somebody to tell me that I'm allowed to be creative."
So the actor, who studied French at Columbia University, worked in independent films like "Brick," and founded the website hitRECord.org, where writers, musicians, photographers, and other artists collaborate on a variety of projects. Perhaps because he hasn't always been considered a hot commodity in Hollywood, Gordon-Levitt doesn't consider it the be-all, end-all of his life. "There are certain patterns and repetitions and connections in my world, and throughout all of creation, that lead me to believe that there is a connection and there's a unity," he says. "And we all -- everything -- are all one thing all at once."
