Bloggers abuzz about Miley Cyrus photo scandal

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Miley Cyrus is the only recent teen superstar who has had to manage career-endangering controversy in the midst of major success on several fronts.

The wholesome 15-year-old singer apologized on Sunday for posing for sexually provocative pictures for Vanity Fair, and has taken a drubbing in the media. Everything had been going so well: She has three albums on the Billboard 200, a box office hit with a recent concert film, a sold-out 2007 tour, as well as a hugely popular television show.

The first measure of Cyrus' album sales since the story broke won't be available until May 7, but Nielsen BuzzMetrics, which measures blog traffic, shows a 150% spike in discussion about Cyrus' album "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" between April 27 and April 29.

That album was perched at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 last week. She also has two other albums on the chart: "Hannah Montana 2" (No. 34) and "Hannah Montana 2: Non-Stop Dance Party" (No. 141).

To date, the singer and star of the Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana" has sold nearly 7 million records in the United States between her two personas, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Other teen musicians touched by scandals in the recent past were not enjoying Cyrus' level of all-around success when their stories broke.

Nude photos of Vanessa Hudgens -- another Disney Channel-made star (in her case, via the "High School Musical" series) -- surfaced online in September 2007. But by that point, Hudgens' most recent release, September 2006's "V," was nearly a year behind her.

In the eight weeks leading up to September 2, 2007 -- shortly before the Hudgens scandal broke -- the album sold 27,000 copies. In the eight weeks subsequent, it moved 17,000 -- a decline of 36%.

But, a year into its life-cycle, sales declines were to be expected for "V," and it's not clear whether Hudgens' photos had much, if any, effect on its trajectory. Moreover, Hudgens' overall individual success to that point was much smaller in scale than Cyrus' is now. "V" has sold a total of 570,000 units to date.

Lindsay Lohan also initially rose to fame via Disney, in her case via films like "The Parent Trap." She added singer to her resume in 2004 when she released her first album, "Speak," but when drugs- and alcohol-related headlines arose in 2007, Lohan, like Hudgens, was not currently active on the charts.

Lohan's most recent release at that time was 2005's "A Little More Personal (RAW)." The album spent seven weeks on The Billboard 200, falling off by February 2006 -- more than a year before her arrests in May and July of 2007.

Miley is a good person inside and I don't want that to go away. I watched Britney Spears turn bad since I was 6 years old. Yeah I'm that young. She knows God made her the way he wanted and that should stop her from turning into a Cassanova model if you want to put it that way.Miley please hold on to your innocence. Don't turn on God and your fans. Please don't for t

I think it is all about context. If you were on set you would never know that the photos would appear as sultry as they do. ONLY Annie had the eye of the camera and cropping is where the real trick is. And open your eyes people...how often do you see photos 2 weeks before a magazine on stands? Hello...Vanity Fair promotion? Impressive-I'm sure circ numbers will be up 1M. Quit tearing

Okey haters get over yourselves, all ur doing is trashing a fifteen-year-old girl ur the reason young celebs turn out crappy anyway! Plus, its just as much the photographers fault she wanted her to pose like that and she tooke the photo, its really not fair to trash Miley and not her. None of u would like to be talked about like this or have your kids talked about like this.

she's just a little ho who is trying to grow up too fast. i wouldn't be surprised if she heads down the same path as brittany or someone like that, and i will just laugh. and to think that she would try and sully the name of annie leibovitz to save her ass is disgusting she saw the proofs of the photos, as did her parents and approved the photo. she's a %@!*# for trying to

yall need to quit hatein the girl, she made a mistake as did her parents. She is 15 yrs old and you talk about her as if she is an adult. My god. Is this what society has come to. If so we are all going to hell in a hand basket. Just because she is famous she is not allowed to make mistakes or what. She is still a good role model. Yall need to get a life people.....
